Good Grief | Brennan Turns 7

It was Thanksgiving of last year and I was watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving with the girls, and it hit me. A Snoopy themed party for my Dog loving girl would be PERFECT. Being that her birthday is at the beginning of Summer, I wanted the colors to be vibrant and fun.

This theme was incredibly special to me. One of my father’s favorite things was Peanuts. He loved the illustrations, collected all the things and had a special love for Snoopy. This party was for him.

Here is a peek at the mood board, highlighting all the fun colors and working in the amazing illustrations from Nysha Lily as well.

Before we get into her party, let’s take a look back at her past celebrations.

Six | Five | Four | Three | Two | One

As per usual, I planned this party at home, when I do this, I am designing around my home. I make decisions around my dining room table, my existing furniture and “covering up” things like my bar and my hutch. I truly focused on this party when I had some downtime after the holidays- I started collecting and planning from there. I will say, I got very lucky that so many beautiful brads like Urban Outfitters, Sugarfina and Zara have Peanuts collaborations. When I started searching, I grabbed what I loved and planned with that. Something else I am always careful with, is characters- this might be my first “character party.” I go in gently with this using characters in nostalgic, classic ways- so the party didn’t feel cheesy.

The Treat Table

I used our record player table, right where it was in the room, and had, what I think, is one of my best ideas of all time. I made the tablecloth on the table Linus’s blanket. I hand drew Linus (along with a few other characters), but left a spot for the corner of the tablecloth to be held in his hands like his blanket. I kept the record player on the table with a few Charlie Brown vinyls spinning at the party. To me, the music is SUCH an important part of Peanuts, it really enveloped the party and completed it.

On this table, I also wanted to play with Peppermint Patty. She is not so much a main character, but I HAD to do custom York Peppermint Patties. Itsy Bitsy Parties made the most amazing packaging for the candies and I accompanied the candies with Jeni’s Peppermint Patty Ice cream. We used polka dot spoons and finished the table with a beautiful acrylic menu by Atomic Kraftworks.

A hand drawn Peppermint Patty was in front of the table to round it all out. Above the table I did a gallery wall- groundbreaking I know. I just love the addition of frames and artwork. I featured a family piece of Snoopy at the Macy’s Day parade, along with framed sketches and a letter board. I also had a TON of small items like stickers, buttons and postcards I wanted to display. I took a giant tray I used at Ray’s Pool Party last year and converted my items into magnets, styling a little pin board to show everything off. I finished the board with little paper bows that were actually supposed to go on the cups

The Table

That brings me to the table. I started with the most simple things, the cups. My Mind Eye sent me one of their Valentine Collections in February, featuring all black and white, with stripe bows. When I got the cups and realized they started plain, and the bow was an add on- the line across the top instantly brought me to the Charlie Brown Zig Zag. As I said before, I wanted to honor my dad in this party- I happen to have four of his original sketches in my diary from the year 2000. I had them digitized and made into stickers to place on the cups and make something custom, and incredibly special. To each cup I added polka dot straws and Woodstock stirsticks.

In this collection, their black and white square plates, were also perfect and it was decided- a black and white table it is. I really loved the nod to the classic comic in newspapers, pencil sketches and the iconic colors of snoopy himself.

I found the CUTEST snoopy notebooks from Zara and thought they would look so good on the table, as well as add a fun activity. I grabbed scratch and sniff stickers and Peanuts stamp/markers so the kids could decorate their sketchbook.

I draped my table in a linen white table cloth and called my girl Cami Monet to help me with a table runner. I complied old comics and my dad’s drawings to make a table runner in black and white. Down the runner I started with three vases I found at Anthropologie at the beginning of the year. It was one of those things that make me so happy I plan so far in advance, the second I saw them I knew the colors were perfect.

To add to the table setting, I had Itsy Bitsy create ribbon pins for each seat. Lindsay has made ribbons for me in the past and I loved them so much. I had one idea, to make a pin took like Charlie Brown by adding black rickrack on a yellow ribbon and that got the ball rolling. I thought It would be so fun to have eight of my favorite characters represented at each place. I gave each character a color of the rainbow, Itsy created incredible typography to encapsulate the character and the way the popped on the table was incredible. I paired a rainbow napkin with each setting just like Snoppy would set the table.

I knew I wanted to add elements from A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, if you remember, Snoopy is hosting Thanksgiving and his menu consists of toast, pretzels, popcorn and jelly beans- so you better believe we had all of those available. In the movie, he also had little pink puddings at each spot. I commissioned my incredible neighbor/baker, Michi Cakes, to make me eight pink dot cakes with a cherry on top. They turned out so PERFECT and I loved that each kid had their own cake.

Of course, Woodstock was flying over the table from our light fixture (this was totally Brennan’s idea).

The Cake Table

Do I have a snoopy dog house red dresser in my house already? Of course, so I might as well use it! I used our red dresser in the corner of the room and created a Snoopy and Woodstock to perch on the drawer as if he was laying on top of the house. I used my projector, poster board, foam core and markers to create all the characters.

This is where I featured the cake, candy and treats. I use one Peanuts poster book to create a beautiful backdrop. I rewatched A Charlie Brown Christmas to prep for this party and was incredible inspired when Charlie and Linus go to the Christmas Tree Farm shopping for a tree. All the trees in the film are funky and colorful and thought it was a great idea for the cake. Being that it’s June, I wanted to make a nod to the holidays without going overboard. Atomic Kraftworks created acrylic toppers out of my tree drawings, I did seven trees, one being THE Charlie Brown Christmas Tree. Michi Cakes created a simple red velvet cake to look like snow.

Paired with the cake, I created a candy board with candy from Sugarfina. Highlighting the colors of the party in candy, adding in the most gorgeous white on white cookies by Royally Iced Sweets. The kids also got to take home a box of Woodstock Lemonade stars as a favor. I grabbed the cutest comic plates and custom Good Grief by Suburban Soiree napkin for the cake.

The Bar

Of course, the bar always gets transformed into something to match the theme, and remember it is now green and wallpaper which makes this task a little more difficult. I thought it would be a great opportunity to create Lucy’s Psychiatric Stand. It still served as the bar with lemonade, root beer and cream soda. I added the CUTEST Charlie Brown Napkins made by Suburban Soiree, and custom Peanut M&Ms.

The Hutch

Typically the hutch is something to hide, and it was no different here. I added pages from a Peanuts book of comics, and character drawings, but this time in color. I used the matching black and white bow garland across the top and layered in some fun themed items as well.

Outfits + Activity

I decided to rent a bounce house for the kids, which is ALWAYS a good idea. I knew just coloring was not going to cut it. The kids spent SO much time in the house, they loved every second- and of course it’s a perfect photo backdrop.

I had a blast with their outfits. I have been solely shopping at Zara for the girls, their items are so chic and become some of my favorite details. I found the cutest Peanut T Shirt for Brennan and paired it with a pink pant and yellow headpiece. For the older girls, I went with a take on the primary colors – blue jump suit for Ray and the cutest Red sweater and striped pants for Denver.

I had Rolly Polly make a STUNNING custom hat for Brennan in red velvet with a black and white pom and a tiny yellow bow.

I wore an Anthro dress and the cutest Snoopy and Woodstock Earrings.

The Invite + Flatlay

Itsy Bitsy Parties and I decided to make the invite Snoopy’s Dog house, the actual shape of the house wasn’t anywhere in the party so we thought it would be perfect. I added in Peanuts Stamps, yellow ribbon, black and white elements, and my favorite moment- the red ornament. I also loved including Nysha’s parade snoopy- she was so talented and I loved having her present at the party.

The Photographer

I called in my girl Kerissa Brockman who has recently moved to the Charleston area to shoot the party and she did not disappoint. She has an incredible connection to Charles Schultz and Peanuts- growing up in Northern California, so this was the perfect party for her to shoot. I will cherish these photos for the rest of time.

To all the vendors who worked with me, created for with me and brought this party to life. This was a love letter to my father and a celebration of Brennan. They had never met, but there is now a deep connection we will all remember.

XO,

Kelsey
